The Attorney General is looking for a highly motivated and skilled attorney and manager to join her team as Deputy Division Chief in the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Energy & Environment Bureau. EPD represents the Commonwealth in state and federal litigation, including enforcement of environmental laws, challenges in federal court, and the defense of state agencies.
The Deputy Division Chief is responsible for assisting the Division Chief with the management and administration of EPD and its 20 staff members. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, supervising, reviewing, and approving all federal court filings and managing the Division’s extensive federal docket; filing complaints and litigating state affirmative and defensive cases; communicating and working closely with state agencies, including the Department of Environmental Protection; advising professionals in the Division and other units of state government on substantive legal, procedural, and policy matters; assisting the Division Chief with the day-to-day management of the Division; supervising paralegals and support personnel; and reviewing and editing Division work product to ensure consistent and high quality court filings and other work. The Deputy Chief will serve as the lead attorney on selected cases or policy initiatives.
Applicants must have experience mentoring and/or supervising legal and non legal staff of varying experience levels; strong leadership skills; significant litigation experience with a preference for environmental protection litigation; ability and desire to oversee multiple complex and challenging matters simultaneously; strong negotiation, analytical, and written and oral communication skills; and the ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment.
Applicants must be able to effectively represent and advocate for the Commonwealth and the Attorney General before the courts, federal, state, and local agencies and governments, and the public; and must be a member of the Massachusetts bar with at least five years of experience as a practicing attorney and
with a preference for experience in the environmental protection field. A demonstrated ability to quickly and successfully learn previously unfamiliar concepts and material is preferred. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment.
